Farmers Insurance Open: Day 2 Recap

On the second day of the Farmers Insurance Open tournament, windy conditions made play more challenging than usual.

Farmers Insurance Open: Day 2 Recap

Ludvig Aberg and Lanto Griffin ended the second round of the Farmers Insurance Open tied for the lead after battling extreme wind conditions at Torrey Pines. Both players sit at 6-under 138 after a challenging day on the South Course. Aberg posted a 3-over 75, while Griffin carded a 72 in conditions that tested even the most skilled golfers.

The round featured wind gusts exceeding 35 mph, causing an 86-minute suspension of play. Stationary balls moved, hats flew, and players fought to control their shots in the unrelenting conditions. Griffin described the experience as a grind: “Walking to the 13th tee, it started gusting 35 miles an hour… it was kind of hang on for dear life, try and save pars, and sprinkle in a birdie or two.”

The North Course, more exposed to the ocean, proved especially punishing. World No. 4 Hideki Matsuyama struggled with the elements, posting a 75 but managing to make the cut at 1-under. The day’s scoring average reflected the difficulty, with the North Course playing slightly harder (75.6) than the South Course (75.3).

Eric Cole, who finished three shots off the lead with a 71, noted how unpredictable the conditions were: “It started really blowing on our second or third hole… it just seemed like extra gusty and kind of switching directions.” Players described the day as unique and unusually tricky, even for a coastal course known for its challenges.

Notable Performances and Withdrawals

Danny Walker sits at 5-under, while Chris Gotterup’s 69 tied for the day’s best round, placing him alongside Hayden Springer and Sungjae Im at 4-under. Amateur Luke Clanton made a strong push early in his round but faltered amid the worst wind conditions. He paused play on the 17th hole and will resume Friday.

Defending champion Max Homa, struggling with illness and two poor rounds, withdrew late in the day during the wind delay, leaving just three holes unfinished.

The extreme weather wasn’t the only disruption. A brush fire broke out just four miles from Torrey Pines near UC San Diego, briefly threatening nearby areas. San Diego Fire-Rescue contained the three-acre blaze quickly, ensuring no further interruptions to the tournament.

With the wind expected to subside on Friday, players and fans alike anticipate a less turbulent day of golf. Aberg and Griffin lead the pack, but the unpredictable nature of Torrey Pines ensures no lead is safe. As the tournament unfolds, the resilience and skill of the players will continue to be tested.
