Farmers Insurance Open: Day 1 Recap
The Farmers Insurance Open kicked off at Torrey Pines with thrilling performances, showcasing why this San Diego tournament remains a fan favorite. The opening day featured standout moments from rising stars and seasoned pros on both the North and South Courses. Here’s a closer look at the highlights from Round 1 in this Farmers Insurance Open: Day 1 Recap.
Ludvig Åberg Leads the Field
Ludvig Åberg set the tone with an incredible 9-under-par 63 on the North Course, taking a two-shot lead. The 25-year-old Swede played nearly flawless golf, hitting 16 of 18 greens in regulation. He racked up eight birdies and an eagle on the coastal course. Åberg called San Diego his “favorite place in the world” and praised Torrey Pines as a “really, really cool place.”
This marks the first time Åberg has led after a first round on the PGA Tour. His strong start builds on a fifth-place finish in Maui earlier this season. “I like when you hit a lot of drivers,” Åberg said, adding that he plans to continue this aggressive strategy in the next round.
Strong Performances on the South Course
Danny Walker and Hayden Springer trail closely behind at 7-under-par. Walker excelled on the more challenging South Course, where the scoring average was 72.487 compared to 70.218 on the North. His bogey-free round highlighted precision and control, impressive for a rookie in just his fourth PGA Tour start.
Lanto Griffin, Zac Blair, Zach Johnson, and Aldrich Potgieter followed at 6-under-par, all playing the North Course. Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, the top-ranked player in the field, managed a solid 4-under-par 68 on the South Course.
Challenges for Defending Champion
Defending champion Matthieu Pavon struggled on the South Course, posting a 1-over-par 73. Zach Johnson, who hasn’t won since the 2015 British Open, impressed with a strong opening round on a sponsor’s exemption. Notably absent this year are past champions Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa, who withdrew ahead of the tournament.
Excitement Builds for Round 2
The Farmers Insurance Open: Day 1 Recap highlights an exciting start to this San Diego favorite. With the final round moved to Saturday to avoid NFL conference championship conflicts, fans can expect more drama as players tackle Torrey Pines’ iconic courses. Åberg aims to maintain his lead, while rookies like Walker and seasoned pros like Matsuyama look to climb the leaderboard.
