San Diego Municipal Golf Course Successes

San Diego’s municipal golf courses — Torrey Pines, Balboa Park, and Mission Bay — achieved impressive milestones last year. Together, they hosted 420,000 rounds of golf in the 2024 fiscal year, generating $40 million in revenue and earning $14 million in profit. These numbers highlight the ongoing popularity of golf in San Diego and the exceptional management of the city’s public courses.

Torrey Pines North led the way with 94,000 rounds played, attracting both locals and visitors with its iconic ocean views and championship-caliber design. The city’s municipal golf system includes 81 holes spread across 400 acres, all managed by the Parks and Recreation Department. The department oversees a $28.4 million budget with a dedicated staff of 122 members who maintain the courses and ensure smooth operations.

Course Updates

Starting in January, green fees will increase by 3% for San Diego residents and 5% for non-residents. These adjustments aim to cover rising operational costs, fund future improvements, and enhance the overall golfing experience. While fee increases are always a topic of discussion, they reflect the city’s commitment to maintaining top-notch facilities. Plans are already underway to modernize some of the courses. At Torrey Pines, the city has started the first phase of a master plan to replace the aging clubhouse and maintenance facilities. The new design will include a state-of-the-art golf shop, a 150-cart storage barn, and office space for administrative staff. The city has selected an architect for the project, and contract finalization is currently in progress.

At Balboa Park Golf Course, safety improvements are a key focus. The city plans to realign the road near the nine-hole course to create a safer environment for pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists.

These updates demonstrate San Diego’s dedication to offering outstanding public golf facilities. Whether you’re a local golfer or visiting for the first time, these courses provide a memorable experience. Stay tuned for more updates as these exciting projects move forward. We look forward to celebrating more San Diego municipal golf course successes!
